It's all TOO common...
You've just realized you have a friend you're going to see, a date on Saturday, and a job interview at the end of the week. You start shopping for your next signature scent to leave a great impression, but everything you try is just too expensive. One by one you smell and ask "Is it really worth it...?".
After some consideration, whether worth it or not, you end up taking the plunge and buying that expensive designer perfume. Now the question that keeps popping into mind is "WHY are designer perfumes SO expensive?".
As a small niche perfume brand, we can and will gladly let you in on the secrets, because this is exactly the question we want to answer on a daily basis to customers.
First thing first let's break down what's needed to make a perfume or fragrance. You need some components/ingredients. A finished product typically has perfume oils, denatured alcohol, bottle, cap, sprayer, labeling, and packaging. Some other costs that won't be included for the sake of a focus on the perfume include: advertising and shipping costs.
Ok, so now you know what goes into making a ready to sell perfume. Out of that list you probably think the perfume oils are the most important and expensive part of making a perfume, which would be why perfumes are so expensive. Well... it might surprise you to know that the perfume oils are arguably the least expensive component to making a perfume. So if the oils are so inexpensive why am I paying so much?
There are typically 3 majors reasons why perfumes or fragrances are so expensive. It really comes down to:
Advertising: It's expensive for any brand or company, BUT especially expensive for designer fragrances. In many instances they hire Hollywood celebrities or music artists to endorse and serve as the face of the perfume. This is super LAME to us. Why focus on celebrities when you can celebrate the real people that wear your fragrance?
Markups: About 80% of fragrance purchases are still made in physical retail locations. For this reason there are retail markups that drive the purchase price up on perfumes. If it weren't already bad, when you go to purchase a perfume or fragrance directly from the brands they still keep the retail markup that shouldn't be there since it's direct!
Branding: It's no secret that luxury or designer brands can slap their logo onto all kinds of products and charge whatever they want for it. More often than not, there is no difference in quality that justifies the huge price tag.
So what now?
